Sulfates — chiefly sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), and ammonium lauryl sulfate — are anionic surfactants: molecules with a water-loving head and an oil-loving tail that lift grease and grime off hair so water can rinse them away. They are the most effective, most affordable cleansers in hair care, and also its most demonized ingredients. The balanced reality: sulfates are not toxic and not 'evil' — they are simply strong. How sulfates clean (and why that strength cuts both ways)

A sulfate molecule is a classic surfactant: a charged, water-loving sulfate head attached to an oil-loving hydrocarbon tail. In the shower, the tails embed themselves in sebum, product residue, and grime while the heads stay anchored in water; agitation breaks the soil into micelles — microscopic droplets wrapped in surfactant — that rinse away cleanly. Sulfates excel because they are small, aggressive micelle-formers with strong charge: they penetrate and emulsify oily films quickly, completely, and at low cost.

The same efficiency is the drawback. Hair's outer surface carries a thin bound-lipid layer, and the scalp's comfort depends on retaining part of its sebum between washes. A strong anionic surfactant does not distinguish 'excess' oil from 'structural' oil — it takes everything. On an oily, resilient head this is exactly the job. On a dry, porous, chemically treated, or tightly curled head (where sebum barely travels down the strand to begin with), it leaves the fiber stripped: cuticle raised, friction up, frizz up, color leaching faster.

Formulation moderates much of this. SLES — SLS put through ethoxylation — is meaningfully milder than SLS. Modern sulfate shampoos also blend in amphoteric co-surfactants like cocamidopropyl betaine and add conditioning polymers, so a well-built SLES shampoo is far gentler than the sulfate reputation suggests. Sulfate myths vs. reality

'Sulfates cause cancer' — false, and worth saying plainly. This decades-old email-chain rumor has been repeatedly debunked; safety assessments of SLS and SLES in rinse-off cosmetics consistently find them safe as used. SLES manufacturing involves a trace-contaminant question (1,4-dioxane) that regulators monitor and manufacturers control; it does not make sulfate shampoo a carcinogen.

'Sulfates make your hair fall out' — unsupported. Hair loss is driven by genetics, hormones, illness, stress, and nutrition.
